ART THERAPY WITH JENNIFER

Managing depression… discovering hope
Minimizing anxiety… finding calm
Controlling anger… channeling energy
Lessen loneliness…. improve connections
Find your voice.... become empowered

Art therapy is a psychological treatment that compliments verbal ‘talk’ therapy or stands alone as a predominant vehicle to improve mental health.  Art therapy is an activity where people use a variety of art materials to express feelings and explore problems nonverbally, which helps many identify root issues and fears, and uncover strengths to overcome challenge.

Let the art do the talking

For those who have trouble talking, art can help you relax and share your concerns when you feel ready. Relationships—including therapeutic ones--entail healthy boundaries, trust, emotional intimacy and kindness, especially when in conflict. Therapy helps to see that we are spiritual beings with a life force that drives us to find purpose and understanding.

We all have our place in this world and it can be a wonderful fit.

Art therapy can motivate you to face challenges, express yourself, and work through unresolved feelings. We are social creatures of habits and attach ourselves to people, places and routines, as it helps to feel safe and grounded. Sometimes attachments are unhealthy and keeps us stuck. We may not be aware of how routines learned during childhood now affects us in being part of a family or community. Art-making helps to create healthy attachments and art therapy has all kinds of glues--
some create strong bonds,
some are temporary,
and some sparkle.

Ms. Jennifer Davis serves individuals and groups who cope with trauma, depression, anxiety, grief and loss; are developing self-actualization and healthy relationships; or managing chronic and severe mental illness. Her work is inspired by a mother who was a pioneer nursing supervisor and a father who was a self-taught artist. An appreciation of physical and mental health was cultivated after working at the Boston University Medical Center and fortified through graduate school and subsequent training in New York City agencies that served various underrepresented communities.

As a clinical art therapist, Jennifer seeks to provide affordable mental health care for groups and individuals, and advocate mental health awareness. Children and young adults are at risk of suffering from anxiety, depression, and difficulty coping with transitions, such as those that can occur from parent separations, family loss, changing grades, or the growing pains from experiencing a new developmental stage in their life. Young adults are filled with impactful experiences, emotions, and growing beliefs about self and the world that can carry over into adulthood. Therapy can help young adults feel a sense of control, make positive decisions, and learn to cope with challenges through creative 'mistakes,' and articulate their emotional needs in a safe space.

Adults seeking therapy are invited to become aligned with one’s values and beliefs to develop a healthy sense of self. This includes cultivating acceptance, growth, and a belief that each day you did your best. All of us are walking a path, stepping on stones, and have a story to tell. In telling your story, you can see each chapter and build a healthy perspective of the past, present and future.

Currently, Jennifer is specializing trauma-informed work, such as ecotherapy, which uses nature to promote healing and growth. Overall, Jennifer's practice is eclectic. In addition to expressive art therapies, various modalities are used based on an individual’s diverse needs. This includes practicing CBT, DBT, Solution-Oriented, Trauma Informed, Motivational and Mindfulness approaches.

Ms. Davis is a nationally registered art therapist who is licensed in New York and dual licensed as an LMHC in Massachusetts. She remains a consultant within a Wellness team for families served by the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services in Washington, DC, board member of TWW Inc, an arts-in-education nonprofit organization, and member of CATs of Color, Art Therapy Credentials Board, American Art Therapy Association, and the Massachusetts Mental Health Counselor’s Association.

Jennifer received Master Degrees in Performing Arts Administration from New York University and Clinical Art Therapy from Long Island University. During 2003-09, Jennifer built QIIQ Productions, a community theater company for children and young adults at the Corridor Gallery, a space owned and operated by Brooklyn’s own Danny Simmons. A passionate advocate for multiculturalism and diversity, Jennifer continuously practices speaking Spanish and learning about indigenous cultures.
